Our History at a Glance
Chair of Building Materials and Institute of Building Research founded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfred Hummel (Nov.1 1948),
Research focuses: lightweight concrete, brick chipping concrete, debris recycling, concrete ABC
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karlhans Wesche takes over the Chair and Institute,
Research focuses: industrial byproducts, coal fly ash
Second teaching and research unit established at the Institut by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Rainer Sasse,
with the additional research fields of polymers and monument conservation
The following split occurred:
– Prof. Karlhans Wesche: Inorganic Building Materials
– Prof. Hans Rainer Sasse: Organic Building Materials
The Organic Building Materials Teaching and Research Area becomes a Chair
Chair of Inorganic Building Materials assumed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Schießl with the additional research areas: Reinforcement and Corrosion
First "Aachener Baustofftag“ (Aachen Building Materials Day), a conference which would become a tradition
Chair of Inorganic Building Materials assumed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Brameshuber and renamed Chair of Building Materials – Construction Materials, with the additional research area: Special Concretes
Chair of Organic Building Materials assumed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Raupach and renamed Teaching and Research Field of Building Maintenance and Repair,
with the additional research areas: Steel Corrosion and Corrosion Protection for Reinforced Concrete
For organizational purposes, the Institute of Building Research was split into two independent areas:
– the Chair of Building Materials with the Junior Professorship of Environmental Compatibility of Building Materials
– the Teaching and Research Field of Building Maintenance and Repair and Structural Polymer Composites in Construction
a) Establishment of a Junior Professorship at the Chair of Building Research:
Dr.-Ing. Anya Vollpracht receives the Junior Professorship of Environmental Compatibility of Building Materials. She is also the head of the Binders Working Group.
b) New Structural Polymer Composites in Construction Teaching and Research Area. This new area will be directed by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Oliver Weichold.
September 16 2016 Dead of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Brameshuber, aged 60.
In November 2018 the Institute of Building Materials Research had its 70th anniversary. A celebration with lots of former employees took place at SuperC at RWTH Aachen University.
At November 8 Dr.-Ing. Peter Schubert, head of the working group Masonry passed away.
